Many of you may not remember this little gem from the late 70’s. With the big hit that was “Welcome Back, Kotter” and, more importantly, its recent removal from the air-waves, “Come On Over, Miller” was free to meet the late 70’s “guy returning from whence he came” demand craved by so many people at that time. Unfortunately, that demand turned out to be mis-understood by the “Come On Over, Miller” producers hence its immediate cancellation after only 5 minutes into its original broadcast. Turns out, “Welcome Back, Kotter” was cancelled because people were, in fact, very sick of the premise. Oh well.
At the time of the initial broadcast, the theme song had not yet been finished (instead opting to temporarily use “Fancy Man Bum Bum” from public domain.) Commissioned with the task of creating a catchy rhythm much like “Welcome Back, Kotter”s theme, composer Alan Poppin floundered under the pressure. He asked fellow composer and vocalist, Timothy Locken, for assistance not only writing but also to sing on the track. All seemed to be going fine until the recording process wherein Locken suffered from a throat hemorrhage due to a burst polyp caused by his intense “breakdown” singing style at the end of the recording. Fortunately, the track was solid, and though the representatives for Mr. Locken’s estate hoped to exclude the track from public knowledge, it has finally emerged in it’s unfinished and original state, much to their dismay.
So I am proud to present to you “Come On Over, Miller” as sung by Timothy Locken (R.I.P.)
